Abstract

Purchasing and Supply Management (PSM) is still not considered a strategic function in many companies although on average more than half of a company's value proposition stems from its suppliers. In today's economy, companies which neglect the strategic management of their supply base fall behind their competitors. In many boardrooms, PSM is currently on top of the agenda. However, PSM can only create the advantages necessary to stay ahead of the competition when a company's supply base is managed according to its overall strategic objectives. Roger Moser analyses the relationships between business priorities and PSM strategy and shows in detail how business strategies influence PSM, in particular supplier selection. He shows how a strategy-based selection of suppliers can generate competitive advantages in PSM and for the company. His work contributes to a research stream which aims at integrating PSM more closely into strategic management. Furthermore, the author develops a PSM strategy concept which enables supply managers to break down strategic priorities from a business strategy level to a PSM level and to define appropriate actions when dealing with suppliers, supply markets and internal customers.

Abstract

Remanufacturing has received increasing attention in the recent past as more companies engage in product recovery management. Ian M. Langella examines the planning of disassembly for remanufacturing of used products, yielding components which are reassembled into as good as new items. Through a thorough analysis of the underlying planning problem, fundamental insights are attained and heuristic solution methods are developed and tested. Although the heuristics exhibit good performance, they remain simple enough to be applied to industrial-sized problems. The author considers both settings where yields are deterministic and stochastic and where the amount of returned products is constrained.

Abstract

The term Supply Chain Management (SCM) first occurred during the 1980s and has since experienced increasing attention from both theory and practice. Julia Wolf focuses on the theoretical aspect of SCM by analyzing the evolution SCM research has undergone and by assessing the question whether SCM research can be considered a scientific paradigm as of today. A number of factors are investigated based on empirical data gathered from publications on SCM in international refereed journals from 1990 to 2006. As a result, four major periods are distinguished in the evolution of SCM research: emergence, acceptance, growth and a final phase of establishment. These periods are characterized in terms of the following factors and their alterations over time: scientific values, object of study, constructs, methods, schools of thought, and the link of research to practice.

Abstract

Especially in times of an economic boom following a crisis, companies have to deal with the phenomenon of the "working capital trap," which signifies a company's increasing need for financial liquidity in times of hindered access to debt capital, caused by the increasingly restrictive credit approval processes of financial institutions. As a consequence of cost savings, this situation is often reinforced by a low level of inventory. This book takes up the problem and shows ways of escaping the "trap" by identifying and strengthening in-house financing potential. First, different operating ratios will be introduced. These refer to the amount of capital committed to the flow of goods and to the amount of in-house financing possible. Subsequently, methods for consolidating in-house financing that are affected by procurement processes will be presented from the company's and the supply chain's perspective. From a company's perspective, the methods for consolidating the amount of in-house financing over the following topics: ¢             The Management of Payment Terms ¢             Inventory Management ¢             Product Group and Supplier Management From the supply chain's perspective, the following methods for extending the possible amount of in-house financing will be discussed: ¢             Finance-Oriented Supply Chain Sourcing ¢             Supply Chain-Oriented Supplier Financing ¢             Collaborative Cash-to-Cash Management ¢             Collaborative Cash Pooling and Netting ¢             Supply Chain Financing Platforms The conceptual models will be clarified using a practical example from the automobile industry. Finally, the "Procurement Value Added" (PVA©) approach will be presented, a concept that measures the contribution of procurement to the company's success.

Abstract

For more than 20 years, researchers and practitioners claimed a transition from traditional purchasing to strategic supply management. However, very few companies actually have been able to make this transition happen. Given the fact that most of the actual practices applied by world-class companies are well known, the question remains why so many companies failed along the way. What does it take to overcome the barriers of purchasing evolution - and what are the benefits? Based on more than 200 interviews with Chief Purchasing Officers around the world and statistical analyses, Michael Stolle presents a new perspective on the challenges of organizational change. The empirical results reveal a complex hierarchy of organizational factors that have to be developed to increase purchasing performance. "Visible" purchasing best practices are only the tip of the iceberg and are based on a profound shift of mindsets of the entire organization. The insights offered by this book will help to understand the mechanics and success criteria of purchasing evolution to supply management.

Abstract

The link between strategies and control systems and how it ultimately af fects the competitiveness of firms is an area that is attracting the atten tion of practitioners and scholars. There is a need to discuss which combi nations of strategies and control systems can be assumed to contribute to competitive strength. In this book we have chosen to highlight the role of management control and manufacturing control in this respect. For a long time these two types of control systems were regarded as more or less separate subjects of research and study. However, the differences between management control and manufacturing control are diminishing, a ten dency that we support. The book is written in this spirit of approval. The models and hypotheses advanced in the book were developed over a long period of time. They are based on research and have been published and otherwise presented in a variety of different circumstances (see, for example, Jansson et al., 2000; Kald et al., 2000; Nilsson, 1994, 1997, 2002; Rapp et al., 2000). Our colleagues have stimulated our thinking and have contributed to further refinement of the thoughts presented in the book. We would like to thank Professor Leif Appelgren, Professor Thomas Falk, Professor Nils Goran Olve, Professor Rolf Rundfelt, Professor Bengt Saven, Associate professor Vivian Vimarlund and Assistant professor Alf Westelius for their valuable comments and inspiration.

Abstract

While supply chain management has risen to great prominence in recent year, there are hardly related developments in research methodologies. Yet, as supply chains cover more than one company, one central issue is how to collect and analyse data along the whole or relevant part of the supply chain. Within the 36 chapters 70 authors bring together a rich selection of theoretical and practical examples of how research methodologies are applied in supply chain management. The book contains papers on theoretical implications as well as papers on a range of key methods, such as modelling, surveys, case studies or action research. It will be of great interest to researchers in the area of supply chain management and logistics, but also to neighbouring fields, such as network management or global operations.

Abstract

Scenario planning is considered the most prominent and powerful technique of futures research. There are, however, indications that such planning practices are not widespread in the logistics service industry. Why and to what extend is this so? Based on 51 interviews with logistics CEOs, strategists, and scenario experts, Heiko A. von der Gracht shows that the logistics service industry draws a backward picture of scenario planning practices as compared to other industries. He further elaborates that the potentials of scenario planning in logistics are, nevertheless, exceptionally high. Explorative research has therefore been conducted that comprises a scenario study on the future of the logistics service industry in the year 2025. Based on a two-round modified Delphi survey with 30 top logistics executives a surprising but realistic picture of the future has been drawn. The scenarios are intended to provide a sound planning basis for long-term logistics decisions, to illustrate the value and potentials of the technique, and to exemplify a systematic scenario development.

Abstract

Companies are increasingly sourcing services from third party providers on a global level. Nevertheless, the academic research on phenomena such as offshoring, international purchasing and the sourcing of certain specific categories is still scarce. Lydia Bals provides terminological clarity regarding the field of offshoring. She identifies different types of offshoring, concluding that the buy option of offshore outsourcing versus hybrid or make options is directly related to purchasing. Her in-depth analysis specifically focuses on the sourcing of marketing services. In this context, the investigations of purchasing/marketing integration provide a conceptual model of barriers to purchasing involvement in sourcing of services. Moreover, the author seeks to shed light on issues of providing incentives for advertising agencies from an agency theory perspective. The case study illustrates that the measures taken against an initially problematic situation in the purchase of advertising agency services correspond with the theoretically identified solution mechanisms.
